Description

Tom Brady, DPW Director in Watertown, MA will be instructing this course. This course provides an in-depth overview of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 87 and its application to modern municipal tree management. Designed for tree wardens, arborists, DPW professionals, and municipal officials, the class examines the legal authority, responsibilities, and practical challenges associated with the protection and management of public shade trees.

Topics include:

  • Legal definitions and jurisdiction under Chapter 87
  • Authority and responsibilities of the tree warden
  • Public hearing requirements and removal procedures
  • Utility coordination and vegetation management
  • Risk management, liability, and public safety considerations
  • Enforcement issues and municipal case studies
  • Best practices for documentation, public communication, and policy implementation

 Participants will gain a stronger understanding of the legal framework governing public trees in Massachusetts and practical guidance for applying the law in day-to-day field and administrative situations. 3.5 CEUs Pending.
