The City of Watertown is seeking a talented and motivated professional to fill the newly created position of Deputy
Director of Public Works. Reporting directly to the Director of Public Works, this key leadership role is
responsible for supporting and managing the department’s day-to-day operations, including highway, cemetery &
parks, water & sewer, forestry, fleet management, traffic control, street lighting and wiring, solid waste
management, and engineering.
Key responsibilities include managing departmental programs and special projects—such as the implementation of
a new work order and inventory management system—as well as serving as the primary liaison to the City’s 311
Service Center to ensure timely, accurate, and courteous customer service. The Deputy Director will collaborate
across City departments and with external partners, analyze operations for improved efficiency, and make strategic
recommendations to enhance departmental performance.
Additional duties involve supporting the development and execution of the department’s operating and capital
budgets, managing vendor relationships and procurement processes, playing a lead role in workforce development,
including recruiting and training, supporting employee/labor relations, and fostering a positive and productive work
culture.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree; at least seven years of progressively responsible
experience, including management and supervisory experience, in a municipal public works or similar setting; or
any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and
abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
TERMS/HOURS: This is a 37.5 hour per week position, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
There may be opportunities for some flexible scheduling at the discretion of the DPW Director with approval from
the City Manager. The ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and on an on-call basis is essential.
SALARY: Starting salary of $115,808. Hiring above Step 1 is dependent on qualifications and experience.
